History

The city center of Amersfoort partially burned down in 1510, as the houses were still made of wood at the time. The municipality then decreed that all houses must be built from stone. The addresses Appelmarkt 15, 16, and Groenmarkt 9 were rebuilt as three separate houses. Since the buildings are located near the Sint Joris Church, they were also referred to as mandate houses. We have been able to trace that there was always at least one or two hospitality businesses operating in these buildings.

In 1941, the three buildings were renovated into what Café Onder de Linde is today. The windows were installed, and the stepped gable on the Groenmarkt side (our entrance) was added to match the stepped gable on the Appelmarkt side. The support beams inside date from 1530 and are original.

Today, Café Onder de Linde is a place where the past and present come together.
